Hunter and Troy’s Blackrock Summit elopement on the Autumn Equinox was everything they could have imagined—romantic, fun, and dynamic, just like them. Set against the ever-changing weather of Shenandoah National Park, they embraced a day filled with fog, sunshine, and everything in between. It was a perfect reflection of their love for nature and each other.

Getting Ready Together at Blackrock Summit

The day kicked off in the most down-to-earth way possible—Hunter (they/them) and Troy (he/him) getting ready together at the Blackrock Summit parking lot. Hunter rocked a blue and orange plaid shirt with an orange tie, while Troy opted for a pink shirt with a pink, blue, and orange plaid tie. Their outfits subtly complemented one another, with alternating plaid and solid prints that felt both effortless and thoughtful. They topped off their looks with beautiful boutonnieres made by Fae Cottage Flower Farm. In a sweet, practical move, they also helped each other pin on their boutonnieres—no stress, no fuss, just teamwork. It set the tone for a laid-back and loving day ahead.

Ceremony at the Top of Blackrock Summit

At the top of Blackrock Summit, Hunter and Troy chose a rocky perch as the backdrop for their ceremony. The hike up felt like a nod to Hunter’s love of rock climbing and they both scrambled to the top with excitement. The fog rolled in as if on cue, creating a misty, almost otherworldly atmosphere that surrounded them.

Their ceremony was truly unique, starting with a moment of quiet. The hush gave them time to center themselves, grounding them in the moment. It was a small pause that carried a lot of weight, allowing them to just be together in the silence before continuing. Then came the music. In a beautiful personal touch, they played “Zombie” by The Cranberries together—Troy on the ukulele and Hunter on the guitar. The song echoed through the fog and it was such a heartfelt expression of their connection.

Next, they performed a tea unity ceremony that reflected both their individuality and the bond they were creating. Hunter brought passion flower and Troy brought mugwort—two different teas that they combined into one cup, symbolizing the blending of their lives. The Nessie the Loch Ness Monster tea strainer they used was a quirky and sweet detail that made the moment feel even more personal. After their tea ceremony, they exchanged rings. The fog swirled around them as they kissed, sealing their commitment to one another in one of the most magical settings Shenandoah could offer.

Lunch & Cake Cutting at Loft Mountain Overlook

Following the ceremony, we headed to Loft Mountain Overlook for a relaxed, intimate lunch. Hunter and Troy brought a spread of various cheeses, meats, fruits, and sweets, which made for the perfect post-ceremony picnic. The charcuterie board they used had its own fun story—they had originally planned to use one from home but realized they forgot it. Luckily, the Loft Mountain Wayside came to the rescue! Hunter and Troy found a Virginia state-shaped board that not only worked perfectly for their meal but also served as a cool souvenir from their day in the park.

The pair even brought along some persimmons they had grown in their own yard. They generously shared them with me and I got to experience trying a persimmon for the first time! It was a small but memorable moment that added to the sense of warmth and adventure that surrounded the whole day.

After their lunch, it was time for cake! But, of course, Hunter and Troy weren’t bringing just any cake—they brought a pumpkin cheesecake, perfect for the Autumn Equinox. They cut the cake together, laughing and feeding each other bites in a relaxed, joyful moment that didn’t feel rushed or overly formal. It was just them, being themselves and soaking in the significance of the day.

Hunter and Troy’s Love Story

Hunter and Troy’s love story began, like so many modern romances, online. But their first in-person meeting was something special. With COVID limiting most social interactions, they met up to walk along the greenway. Troy had just gotten off work from his job in healthcare and Hunter was taking a break from studying. Meeting outside felt like the safest and most comfortable way to get to know each other. And it worked—what started as a simple walk turned into something much bigger.

They both share a deep love for the outdoors—whether it’s hiking, biking, or exploring new places, they’re happiest outside. Their shared passions extend beyond physical activities too. They’re both huge cat lovers and are dedicated to building new support systems in a world where traditional ones are often failing. This passion for creating something strong, supportive, and lasting is a core part of their relationship.

Troy’s work in healthcare and Hunter’s pursuit of studies and personal growth have shaped their outlook on life, giving them a sense of responsibility to care for one another and the world around them. It’s clear that their love isn’t just about shared activities, but about shared values, goals, and a deep respect for each other’s individuality.

Hunter and Troy’s Wedding Day

From getting ready together to their heartfelt ceremony and music-filled afternoon, Hunter and Troy’s elopement beautifully reflected who they are as individuals and as a couple. Their easygoing nature—whether adjusting to the fog or making a quick stop for a charcuterie board—made the day feel light, fun, and full of love. It was an honor to capture their unique day, and I know their journey together will be just as dynamic and adventurous as their wedding day.
