Finding inclusive wedding venues and vendors: where to begin

Finding the right venue and vendors is tricky for every couple. But the LGBTQIA+ community has an additional obstacle to overcome when choosing vendors: will they be inclusive?

Hiring an LGBTQIA+-owned business is always a great option because the people you are working with are more likely to connect with you and your partner and help you navigate any obstacles that might arise.

You do not need to choose only vendors that are personally part of the LGBTQIA+ community. There are also plenty of allies that own wedding businesses and would be honored to be a part of your special day. You just need to know what to look for!

What qualifies a venue or vendor as LGBTQ+ friendly?

Any venue or vendor can use “LGBTQ+ friendly” language on their website and social media platforms. But how do you know that they’re not only accepting but knowledgeable about LGBTQIA+ weddings and the unique complications that many couples have to face while planning?

When trying to determine if a vendor or venue is truly LGBTQIA+ friendly, take a close look at their website and social media posts. Here are a few questions you’ll want to ask yourself:

  • Do they use inclusive language on their website and in their documents?

  • Is their portfolio diverse?

  • Do you see couples similar to you and your partner on their website?

  • Are they not only inclusive of all couples but affirming of those couples as well?

  • What are their values?

When looking at these websites, remember that we are always learning. If a vendor doesn’t have one of the things mentioned above, but you really like them, reach out and ask questions! What’s most important is creating a vendor team that is knowledgeable and ready to support you and your partner.

Is Virginia LGBTQ+ friendly?

Yes! As Virginia.org states, “Since 1969, our famous Virginia is for Lovers state slogan has inspired travelers from around the world to visit the Commonwealth. Today, Virginia is for all Lovers, and is a great destination for LGBTQ+ travelers.”

Like anywhere in the world, there will always be people who do not share the same values as you and your partner. To stay safe and ensure you have a great time in Virginia, do your research before traveling!
